Race Report: Spring Dual Against CF

This was my second race so far this season, and I must say that it went extremely well! My alarm was set for 6AM… to which I then opted to snooze for an addition 20 minutes. I prepare everything I need for the race the night before since I KNOW that I will probably want to press the snooze at least 2 times. (I’ll try to photo document my pre-race ritual next time) Now that I’m finally awake, it’s time for the most boring breakfast of all time…
1 cup of plain organic oatmeal. I know it’s boring, but I know that it’s the meal that works best for me. Since the race was only 25 minutes away, I actually got to sit down at the table like a normal person instead of eating in the car on the way to the race.
Fast forward…
I went out fast in the first 2 mile run. Coming into T1 I was the first female, it was a good sign, but risky since cycling isn’t my strong point (yet). Once i was on my bike I felt confident and relaxed. The bike course was a flat and fast 12 mile out and back right along the Wallkill River. A handful of guys passed me on the bike, and in the last 5 miles of the bike a group started to pass and I knew I had to do everything to stay with them.
And I did! In and out of T2 so fast that I dropped them! Within the last 2 miles of the run I caught up to a teenaged boy, I managed to utter the phrase “we should run together,” he said “yes.” Before I knew it, he fell behind and I was running alone; which I hate, but the pressure was on! I had no idea where the second or third female was, so I could only tell myself that they were right on my tail. Finally, I could see the finish line… I dug deep and kicked it in and looked at the clock 1:03:19.
YES! The second female was almost a full 2 minutes back! What an awesome way to start the season!
The greatest thing about the race is that it was for a cause, the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. CF is a genetic disorder which affects the lungs, pancreas, and liver.
After the race I met some really great people, and met a friend for brunch at Main Street Bistro in New Paltz (this meal totally trumped my lame breakfast of oatmeal). Hopefully I’m not extremely spent after American Zoffingen on May 19th and I can eat there again!
