Beginners Guide to Open Water Swimming

My first triathlon is right around the corner (June 1st)! With that being said, I thought I would do a post on open water swimming.
I’m not a strong swimmer (yet), but I find swimming in open water to be very intimidating. I’m sure in due time I will get to a point where I don’t feel extreme anxiety every time I step into a lake!
After my first plunge in a local lake, which was May 12th, I went home and began reading about open water safety. I read some pretty scary posts from athletes that were strong swimmers that ran into some pretty sticky situations: asthma attacks, getting hit by a boater, encountering dehydration, and that’s just to name a few. My google search left me feeling mortified…
Which is when I stumbled across this video on the Swim Safety Device. This is exactly what I had been looking for!
A couple of days later and it arrived at my door, and I couldn’t wait to swim in open water again, and worry free.
I felt great knowing that people would be able to spot me while I was swimming, especially boaters. And, if necessary, my training buddies or myself would have something to use if we needed to take a brief rest.
What I think is really great about the Safe Swimmer is that it has a dry pocket. So, if you’re doing a destination swim you could put in your towel, some dry clothes, and perhaps a pair of running shoes or even a snack!

I would highly recommend it! It helps me get over the mental part of swimming. For now I’m calling it my security blanket!
